As an avid collector of images, objects, and words, I have long intertwined these little treasures into artwork. I use Victorian/vintage ephemera and imagery as a source for contemporary dialogue. This approach has been translated into both my monotype and intaglio prints and artist books.
I have produced work for many years that demonstrates a particular passion for the book—its content, design, and production. My interest in the clash of the past with the present motivates me to build books using current technology in the style of 19th century design, encased in handcrafted bindings. In the case of A Book of Hours for Radegunde, I chose a medieval codex format with an aumônière (French alms purse) holder.
Most recently, I have been connecting my prints and books through the inclusion of handkerchiefs. They are collaged onto the prints and the books are constructed using hankies for pages. The mixed media prints have hankies attached, either as fragments or whole.
An addiction to the collage process, a dependence on my personal history for theme, and a hopelessly romantic nature are the underpinnings of my work. My dramatic and humorous attitudes gently mock deeply-held spiritual beliefs. Love, in all its tragedy and comedy, remains the essential message of my art practice.
